Challenges faced by client

NRK TV-aksjonen (NRK Telethon) has been held every year since 1974, and is the world's largest fundraising campaign. More than 100.000 people go door-to-door to raise money for a charitable cause, and in 2023 they raised more than 94 million NOK in two hours. It's safe to say, the importance of proper management of collection boxes and volunteers is highly valued.

In previous years, this has been handled with various spreadsheets and printouts, and there has been a lack of digital data and communication with volunteers. This has resulted in little flexibility and overview and more time-consuming processes.

No-code solution process

The technical department at NRK TV-aksjonen reviewed various options for solution development. No-code not only enabled rapid development but also kept costs down.

- We looked at off-the-shelf solutions but found none that met our needs well enough, and traditional development would have been too expensive. It is important to us that funds should go towards the selected charity, so the fact that no-code was both time-efficient and cost-effective was absolutely crucial for us,” explains Iselin Thoreid, Technical Manager at NRK TV-aksjonen.

Frend Digital was appointed the development project. Together, they started development in the spring and had the solution ready by October. They have followed a flexible development methodology with one-week sprints.

- The flexible method has meant that I have been close to the project throughout, and had a full overview and good control along the way, says Iselin.

With approximately 30% using the new solution this year, TV-aksionen and Frend are working on a gradual transition so that even more people will use the tools in the future.

Key Results

Frend developed two tailor-made apps using Appfarm:

Campaign portal: An app for volunteer organizers, designed to make organizing easy and intuitive. The portal includes features for registration, communication and a map-based system showing meeting locations.

The collector app: An app that gives collection box carriers access to the necessary information, including attendance time and location, making the fundraising day seamless and efficient.

  • The new digital system contributed to 33% increase from last year in fundraising amounts from collection boxes
  • 30% of volunteers used the new digital tool this year
  • Efficient organization and implementation of the fundraising campaign
  • Simpler and more user-friendly system
